Few people fish for money, but Missouri catfish

anglers don’t have to turn pro to collect cash rewards.

JEFFERSON CITY–The only thing anglers like as much as fishing is telling fish stories. The Missouri Department of Conservation will pay up to $150 for your story if you catch the right catfish.

In its continuing effort to put catfish management on a firm scientific footing, the Missouri Department of Conservation has tagged thousands of blue and flathead catfish in lakes and streams throughout the state. In years past, those tags carried rewards ranging from $25 to $50 for anglers who reported catching tagged catfish. More recently, the agency upped the ante, offering as much as $150 for some tagged catfish.

DEXTER, MO. - Missouri FFA students will soon be in the field with farmers to learn how cutting-edge science on the farm could help the Gulf of Mexico. The program involves testing corn stalks for nitrogen, allowing farmers to maintain maximum crop production while reducing the fertilizer pollution that travels the Mississippi River. That fertilizer contributes to the Gulf's "dead zone," an area of low-oxygen water at the river's mouth.

Comprehensive Angler Access Study Has Surprising Results PDF Print E-mail

Results of a recent comprehensive angler access study by the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) and Responsive Management - 2010 Angler Access in the U.S. Report reveal some surprising views by anglers, private landowners and professional fish and wildlife managers who make decisions regarding angler access. Interviews were completed with more than 4,000 landowners and more than 4,100 recreational anglers. This is the first study of its kind to include landowners that have water on, adjacent to or running through their property to document their assessment of angler access. The most important finding is that two-thirds of anglers access most of their fishing from public lands with about half of those anglers primarily fishing from private boats, this includes both fresh and saltwater.
